Two borough parks are flying high after retaining their prestigious Green Flag awards yet again – to the delight of visitors and volunteers alike.
Palfrey Park has retained its Green Flag for the seventh year running, while it’s the sixth year running for Willenhall Memorial Park.
The news was announced today (Monday 28 July 2014).
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and was developed as a means of recognising and rewarding the best in the country.
It is a sign to visitors that the park is well-maintained and well-managed – with excellent facilities.
Both parks attract around a million visitors a year between them and Palfrey now boasts a pavilion while Willenhall has an outdoor gym and new skate park.
Councillor Sean Coughlan, chair of the Friends of Willenhall Memorial Park, said: “This is great news – congratulations to everyone involved.
“We have a really enthusiastic friends group and volunteers should be proud of themselves for their invaluable support in helping Willenhall retain its Green Flag again in 2014.”
Times may have changed over the last 20 years but Walsall’s park fun days are still every bit as popular now as then – attracting thousands of visitors.
Organised by Walsall Council’s senior park rangers, this year’s dates have just been announced.
Events are being held between 23 July and 27 August across the borough’s parks and will feature stalls, activities and children’s rides.
They are free admission, but there will be charges to go on the rides.

Willenhall will not be disappointed and should be very proud to have it’s very own flag, its very own mark and identity that will be used to literally fly the flag for our hometown!
The honors will be done by local born & bred Willenhall man, Mr Glyn Marston.
We had no hesitation of putting Glyn forward for this occasion as the whole project has been about promoting Willenhall and putting Willenhall back on the map and what better way than by local man Glyn. Many of you will know the hard work that Glyn has put into fundraising over the years, running over 100 marathons.
Glyn Marston said, “ I am really overwhelmed by the request to launch the flag for Willenhall. Being Willenhall born and bred I am so proud of our little town and its heritage. To see Willenhall get its own official flag is great for our community and I am so proud to be launching the flag. A lot of hard has gone into making the flag a reality which in itself shows just how proud Willenhall folk are of their town and the flag will signify that we love Willenhall. It will definitely be one of my most proudest moments when I launch the Flag of Willenhall.”
We hope you all join us in launching the flag which will take place at this years Willenhall Carnival at Willenhall Memorial Park on 14th June!
WALSALL youngsters can hunt down some seasonal treats across local parks this Easter.
Five free Easter egg hunts have been organised by Walsall Council’s senior park rangers during this holiday period.
John Millard, Walsall Council senior park ranger, said: “Youngsters really love the Easter egg hunts – and we like to think it’s not just for the treat at the end!
“They also have a lot of fun exploring our parks and making new friends as they go in search for the eggs. We hope this year’s will prove just as popular and look forward to keeping hunters on their toes.”
The first egg hunt will take place on Good Friday (April 18) at the Green Flag Award-winning Willenhall Memorial Park in Pinson Road.
Teams of under-10s and under-14s are invited, with each team consisting of a maximum of three members.
Registration at Willenhall Memorial Park takes place at the pavilion at 10.30am for a 10.45am start.
The one hour stroll around Walsall Arboretum will take place every Thursday from 24 April to 14 August and the Willenhall Memorial Park walk every Wednesday from 30 April to 13 August. Both walks will cover a distance of two to three miles on both hard and soft surfaces.
