THE Black Country flag will be flying high in Walsall this summer as the borough gets set to host two bostin’ festivals.
Darlaston and Willenhall will host the separate three-day events in July in aid of Black Country Day – an initiative thought up by musician Garry Sawyers, who is locally known as Black Country Gaz.
“I came up with the idea last summer and it has been steadily growing,” said Tipton-born Gaz.
“Black Country Day is being held on a Monday (July 14) so I thought – ‘let’s turn this into a festival to enable people to celebrate on the weekends too.’
“Since then, various venues have been contacting me to take part in various celebratory events for the whole month of July.”
Darlaston will hold its festival in a three-day extravaganza on July 10, 11 and 12.
Activities will be held between 10am and 4pm each day – and there will be fun for the whole family, with a large sand pit and toys, water boats and an inflatable slide adding to the mix.
On the Saturday, there will also be a photo booth offering free keepsake photos for attendees, a children’s fairground ride, animal farm, a stage unit with local acts playing all day, charity stalls, stilt walkers and fire breathers.
There will be face painters, balloon modelling, the Reach Up climbing frame and Move Bus with activities plus lots of economic support for local businesses and agencies.
It is being organised by Darlaston Town Centre Partnership and Darlaston Events Committee.
The Willenhall festival will take place on July 24, 25 and 26.
Activities will be held between 10am and 4pm each day and will include the same features and activities as the Darlaston festival.
Its a great cause and a great charity!

Recently crowned Miss Black Country, Shelley- Marie is also calling on your support –
“On Sunday 18th May 2014 at 11am I will be taking part in the Race for Life at the Walsall Arboretum to raise money for Cancer Research UK. However I won’t be running, jogging or walking it alone. I have signed up as a group, ‘Miss BC’s Girls’. My aim is to try and get as many family, friends and ladies of the Black Country as I can to join me as Miss Black Country’s Girls in the race to support Cancer Research UK. If you are interested in joining ‘Miss BC’s Girls’ then please send me a message and I will send you all the information you need to join. Come on ladies!”
Congratulations to Shelly-Marie-Sumner – the new Miss Black Country crowned last night at the Arena Theatre Wolverhampton.
